Wrigleyville is one of Chicago’s most iconic and frequently visited neighborhoods on the north side. While it is best known for being home to the famous Wrigley Field, the area has a rich history that extends beyond its connection to the sport of baseball.
Wrigley Field was built in 1914 in the heart of Lakeview, originally serving as the home for the Chicago Whales, a team in the Federal League, often referred to as the Third Major League. However, the league folded in 1916, paving the way for the Chicago Cubs to take over the stadium. Initially called Weeghman Field, the stadium was purchased by the Wrigley family in 1920 and renamed Cubs Park. In 1926, it officially became Wrigley Field in honor of team owner William Wrigley Jr.
The Cubs played their first home game in 1916 against the Cincinnati Reds, solidifying the team’s deep ties to the Lakeview neighborhood. Today, the Cubs remain a cherished symbol of Wrigleyville, a point of immense pride for local residents. Discover more at Wrigleyville Chicago.
